Behind the Decks Since 1984

My story as a DJ began in the spring of 1984 in Leverkusen, Germany.

I was standing behind the decks in the cellar of a local youth center called “Phonothek”, with more than 100 people on the dancefloor. One of the first records I played that night was Queen’s “I Want to Break Free” on a Technics SL-7 tangential turntable.

Mixing with that setup was almost impossible. But it didn't matter. What fascinated me from the very beginning was the connection between music and people — seeing a crowd react to a track, feeling the atmosphere change and being part of that moment.

More than four decades later, that is still what DJing means to me.

From the 80s to Deep & Organic House

My musical journey has changed a lot since those first nights.

In the 1980s, my sets were shaped by the music that filled dancefloors at the time. The 1990s brought Eurodance, House and club culture, followed by an increasing passion for the deeper and more soulful side of electronic music.

Over the years, House music became the sound that felt most natural to me.

Today, my sets focus on Deep House and Organic House, combined with Balearic, soulful and melodic influences. I especially love music that has room to breathe — warm grooves that work with an atmosphere rather than competing with it.

That is why sunsets, warm-up sessions, beach clubs, rooftop bars and sophisticated events feel like home to me.

Inspired by Ibiza

Ibiza has played an important part in shaping my musical identity. I have spent many years visiting the White Island, discovering its clubs, beaches, people and, most importantly, its music. What has always fascinated me is that Ibiza isn't defined by one particular sound. Music changes with the place, the people and the time of day.

In 2017, I played at Hush in Sant Antoni and became part of radio shows broadcast from the Mambo Studio above the legendary Café Mambo.

In 2019, my Ibiza journey continued with poolside sessions at Destino Pacha Resort, Playa Sol Mare Nostrum, New Algarbe and Jabeque.

Since 2019, selected DJ of 69 sets have also been broadcast by Ibiza Global Radio.

These experiences have influenced the way I play today: relaxed when the moment calls for it, gradually building energy when the atmosphere changes, and always choosing music for the people in front of me.

AbSoulute Beach

In 2019, another important part of my journey began: AbSoulute Beach. New AbSoulute Beach DJ mixes are published weekly on the official DJ of 69 YouTube channel. Also on Mixcloud and Soundcloud.

What started as a series of carefully selected DJ mixes developed into my weekly 60-minute radio show dedicated to Deep House, Organic House and the relaxed side of electronic music.

Every edition is handpicked and mixed live, taking listeners on a musical journey inspired by the beaches and sunsets of Ibiza. Today, AbSoulute Beach is syndicated to more than 50 radio stations worldwide, with a new journey every week. For me, the show is also a way to keep doing what I have loved since 1984: discovering new music and sharing it with people.

More Than Four Decades – And Still Discovering

A lot has changed since my first night behind those Technics turntables. Vinyl became CDs, CDs became digital files, and today almost every track in the world is only a few clicks away. But technology has never been the important part. The challenge is still finding the right track for the right moment.

I don't believe a great DJ set is about playing one big track after another. Sometimes the most memorable part of a night happens long before peak time — when people arrive, conversations begin, the sun goes down and the atmosphere slowly starts to change. Those are the moments I love to soundtrack.

After more than four decades behind the decks, I'm still searching for new music every week, still enjoying that moment when I discover a track I can't wait to play, and still looking forward to the next time I step behind the decks.
